Making Windmills in P5

As part of our STEAM learning journey with Microsoft DreamSpace, we have had great fun making windmills in P5. The challenge was to create a windmill that would stand by itself. These were individual projects and each of us brought in lots of materials to use.

First we had to design the windmill, we drew diagrams and labelled them. Next we created our windmills. We spent time building the windmills, there were a lot of challenges involved. We had to make sure that the windmill would stand alone, that it was high enough from the ground and we also had to find a way to attach the blades to the windmill.

Next we had to test our windmills. We took them to the field and tested them in the wind. Some windmills worked but we had problems with others. We had to make adjustments to them and then retest to see if they would work.

Finally we reviewed our work. We recorded what worked well and how we might do things differently the next time.

We really enjoyed this project. It was great fun and also helped our computational thinking, creativity and problem solving skills.
